How to solve error when transaction log gets full?
Option 1: You can increase your log file if possible on the disk by removing the restriction to grow. Option 2: If your log file is filled up, it is a good idea to take log backup and clean up your log file. However, this will not work if your transaction is still bigger than available space on your log file.
What to do when SQL log fills up?
I changed the transaction log backup to its normal schedule. After the full backup was completed, I reviewed the sql log, drive space, transaction log size, open transactions and everything seemed fine. If it is a cluster, you could try failing back to the other node and see if that fixes the problem, which in my case was the need for a recompile.
How to reduce the size of the transaction log file?
My first priority was to fix the problem immediately, so users can access the application and then do root cause analysis. For the database in question, I changed the database recovery model to SIMPLE. Then I shrank the transaction log file to a reasonable size (note: you can’t shrink it below its original size).
Why is the transaction log in testdb full?
The transaction log for database ‘TestDB’ is full due to ‘ACTIVE_TRANSACTION’. This is because our Log file is restricted to only 8 MB and the data which we are inserting is larger than 8 MB.
Why is the transaction log file not truncated?
Normally, the log file may not be truncated after a backup for another reason. We can learn why the log file is not truncated using the following query. If the log_reuse_wait_desc is LOG_BACKUP, this means that transaction log is not backed up. To shrink the log file, you should backup your transaction log one or more times.
What happens if Transaction Log has not been backed up?
Under the full recovery model or bulk-logged recovery model, if the transaction log has not been backed up recently, backup might be what is preventing log truncation. If the log has never been backed up, you must create two log backups to permit the Database Engine to truncate the log to the point of the last backup.
