What is a linked server?
Linked servers enable the SQL Server Database Engine and Azure SQL Managed Instance to read data from the remote data sources and execute commands against the remote database servers (for example, OLE DB data sources) outside of the instance of SQL Server.
When would you use a linked server?
A linked server is used to connect to another (remote) database or file (Xls, CVX) using SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) and discover the data or objects. You can write SQL queries from your SSMS directly on a database on another machine.
Are Linked servers secure?
Depending on the permissions that such a remote login has at the linked server, this could potentially pose a serious security threat. It is especially dangerous if your linked servers use a login that has the sysadmin role at the remote server.
How to create linked server to AlwaysOn availability group?
There are 3 nodes in the group. The SQL Service is running as a Managed Service account on each node (1 MSA for each server). I am trying to make a linked server on each of the nodes to point to the current active node.
What are the different types of availability groups?
An instantiation of an availability group that is hosted by a specific instance of SQL Server and maintains a local copy of each availability database that belongs to the availability group. Two types of availability replicas exist: a single primary replica and one to eight secondary replicas.
What does it mean to support an availability group Listener?
Supports an availability group listener for each availability group. An availability group listener is a server name to which clients can connect in order to access a database in a primary or secondary replica of an Always On availability group.
How many replicas does an availability group support?
Each availability group supports one primary replica and up to eight secondary replicas. For more information, see Overview of Always On Availability Groups (SQL Server). Each availability replica must reside on a different node of a single Windows Server Failover Clustering (WSFC) cluster.
