What is NetApp SnapManager?
NetApp® SnapManager® automates and simplifies the complex and time-consuming processes associated with the backup, recovery and cloning of databases. SnapManager uses NetApp ONTAP® SnapMirror technology to create copies of backups on another volume and ONTAP SnapVault® technology to archive backups to disk.
Can Veeam backup SQL Server?
To protect Microsoft SQL Server, you can use the Server edition of Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows. You can set up the Veeam Agent backup job to create transactionally consistent backups of Microsoft SQL Server and periodically back up database transaction logs.
How does SnapVault work in NetApp?
SnapVault Snapshot copies capture the state of primary qtree data on each primary system. This data is transferred to secondary qtrees on the SnapVault secondary system. The secondary system creates and maintains versions of Snapshot copies of the combined data for long-term storage and possible restore operations.

Veeam Backup & Replication detects what databases currently exist on the Microsoft SQL Server and maps this data with the information kept in the configuration database. This periodic mapping reveals the databases for which Veeam Backup & Replication must process transaction logs during this time interval.
What are Qtrees for NetApp?
A qtree is a logically defined file system that can exist as a special subdirectory of the root directory within an internal volume. You can create up to 4,995 qtrees per internal volume. There is no maximum for the storage system as a whole. In general, qtrees are similar to internal volumes.
Can a SQL Server Backup be done on SnapManager?
SnapManager does not create or restore backups of Microsoft SQL Server databases that are stored on storage devices that are provided by companies other than NetApp. SnapManager does not support filegroup backups or filegroup restores of Microsoft SQL Server databases. SnapManager does not support differential backup.
Can you make a snapshot of SQL Server on NetApp?
“Just” making a snapshot of volume on your Netapp can not be considered the correct way of making a backup of SQL server databases. It’s not a free Netapp option, so you need additional licenses. But with this solution you are able to create backups in the correct way.
When do I need to use SnapManager restore?
After you configure data storage, you can use SnapManager Backup to create backups of the databases. If the need arises, you can use SnapManager Restore to restore your data (either entire groups of databases or individual databases) from one of the backups.
How is SnapManager used in Data ONTAP software?
SnapManager provides rapid online backup and near-instantaneous restoration of databases by using online Snapshot technology that is part of the Data ONTAP® software. SnapManager can also leverage the SnapMirror capabilities of storage systems to provide onsite or offsite SnapManager backup set mirroring for disaster recovery.
