What is the optimizer in Oracle?
The optimizer generates a set of potential plans for the SQL statement based on available access paths and hints. The output from the optimizer is an execution plan that describes the optimum method of execution. The plans shows the combination of the steps Oracle Database uses to execute a SQL statement.
What is Row Source Generation?
The row source generator receives the optimal plan from the optimizer. It outputs the execution plan for the SQL statement. The execution plan is a collection of row sources structured in the form of a tree. A row source is an iterative control structure.
What is buffer sort explain plan?
So buffer sort is using the buffering mechanism of a sort but not doing the entire sort itself. Footnote: if you run this test on 8i, you would see a sort (join) in the execution plan – but the 10032 shows that even in 8i, the sort isn’t really sorting.
Where is the cardinality estimate in a query optimizer?
The cardinality is the number of rows returned by each operation in an execution plan. For example, if the optimizer estimate for the number of rows returned by a full table scan is 100, then the cardinality estimate for this operation is 100. The cardinality estimate appears in the Rows column of the execution plan.
How are statistics used in a query optimizer?
The statistics improve the degree of accuracy of the measures. For the query shown in Example 4-1, the estimator uses selectivity, estimated cardinality (a total return of 10 rows), and cost measures to produce its total cost estimate of 3: The selectivity represents a fraction of rows from a row set.
Can You Say 0 rows in the optimize?
The Optimize cannot say 0 rows, so it just shows you 1. — now we manually update the stats UPDATE STATISTICS dbo.TestStats WITH FULLSCAN; — check the histogram DBCC SHOW_STATISTICS (‘TestStats’,PK_TestStats) WITH HISTOGRAM; — rerun the queries SELECT ts.*
How many rows does a query execution plan cost?
The plan estimated cost is 1.1 and it estimates it’ll bring back 229 rows. In my test environment it takes 16 ms to run and does several thousand logical reads across the many tables it joins. This means the query optimizer didn’t consider every possible plan, but hey, our runtime was pretty darn good anyway. Now let’s cause some real trouble.
