Will triggers impact performance?
So the answer is No, not without a heavy cost to implement the logic in application level . As I know, triggers will affect performance in insert, update and delete operations. but doesn’t affect read performance.
Why triggers are used in MySQL?
A trigger is a named database object that is associated with a table, and that activates when a particular event occurs for the table. Some uses for triggers are to perform checks of values to be inserted into a table or to perform calculations on values involved in an update.
What are the benefits of triggers?
These are the following advantages of Triggers:
- Trigger generates some derived column values automatically.
- Enforces referential integrity.
- Event logging and storing information on table access.
- Auditing.
- Synchronous replication of tables.
- Imposing security authorizations.
- Preventing invalid transactions.
What happens when you use a trigger in MySQL?
For the sake of simplicity, triggers are the way to go for implementing any kind of tracking of database changes. However, you need to be aware of what happens under the hood when you use triggers. According to MySQL Stored Procedure Programming, page 256 under the head “Trigger Overhead” says the following:
Can a trigger be moved to a stored procedure in MySQL?
For MySQL, the triggers are row by row, so it would be an easy solution. Select the data currently in the table, insert it into the logging table, and the update the “version” column in the new data. However, it’s possible to move this logic to a stored procedure.
When are stored routines and triggers parsed in MySQL?
Stored routines and trigger events are parsed when they are executed. Even “dead” code that will never run can significantly affect the performance of bulk operations (e.g. when running this inside the trigger).
How are the triggers in MySQL case sensitive?
There is two MySQL extension to triggers ‘OLD’ and ‘NEW’. OLD and NEW are not case sensitive. Within the trigger body, the OLD and NEW keywords enable you to access columns in the rows affected by a trigger. In an INSERT trigger, only NEW.col_name can be used.
