What can I use instead of a union?
There are several alternatives to the union SQL operator:
- Use UNION ALL.
- Execute each SQL separately and merge and sort the result sets within your program!
- Join the tables.
- In versions, 10g and beyond, explore the MODEL clause.
- Use a scalar subquery.
Can we replace union with join?
UNION and JOIN are totally different things, so cannot replace each other’s functions, but if used as part of a solution to solve a problem, they can contribute in different ways to the same result. In this example, the desired result is to find whether every object is in group A and/or group B.
Is UNION all expensive?
UNION ALL is a little more costly than selecting multiple resultsets with independent queries since it will introduce a Concatenation operator in the execution plan. I wouldn’t go so far as to say it should be avoided if possible. The implementation of UNION ALL in T-SQL is cheaper than UNION.
Are there any alternatives to the Union operator?
There are several alternatives to the union SQL operator: Use UNION ALL. Execute each SQL separately and merge and sort the result sets within your program! Sometimes, an external sort may be faster. Join the tables. This can be kinda slow, but it is an alternative to using UNION.

Is it possible to write a query without a union?
As I’m playing with this I can’t seem to get what I want without a UNION. Is it possible to write this in a single query?
Which is faster a union or a subquery?
Use a scalar subquery. Try UNION using FULL OUTER JOIN with the NVL function: It is suggested that this has faster performance than the UNION operator. You start by examining the execution plans, and tune them independently. A union simply executes two independent queries and merges the result sets.
