Arduino can only detect the state of your button (pressed OR unpressed). You could use a timer variable (based on this example from their docs) to save the exact time when you pressed or released the button, so you can check the difference between both variables to calculate how long it is on hold or idle.
Once you’ve got a pushbutton working, you often want to do some action based on how many times the button is pushed. To do this, you need to know when the button changes state from off to on, and count how many times this change of state happens. This is called state change detection or edge detection.
How many milliseconds does it take to press a button?
Moreover, a button press is very fast, occurring within 100 milliseconds, and is too fast for correcting movement. The key to understanding button-pressing is therefore to understand how the brain adapts based on the limited sensations that are the residue of the brief press event.
How long is a button?

100 milliseconds One problem the brain must overcome is that muscles do not activate as perfectly as we will, but every press is slightly different. Moreover, a button press is very fast, occurring within 100 milliseconds, and is too fast for correcting movement.
Say the button falls off in your customer’s hand as she pulls the pants out of the washing machine. Your entire company, and your partners, have failed in the grossest possible way. That hard-earned customer will never again fully trust your claim to quality.
How big is a 1.25 button?
How big is a 1.25 inch button? The 1.25 inch button is our second smallest size. Slightly larger than a quarter, the 1.25 pin is small enough for day-to-day wear, about 50% more area than the 1 inch round.

Analog Sensor: Push Button Monitoring. The simplest form of a changing analog reading might be the monitoring of a push button, held low by a pull down resistor. When the button is pressed the reading jumps to 255 as the analog pin reads 5V.
You should store A in it to check the left button, B to check the right button, or A+B to check both at the same time. a boolean value that is true if the button you are checking is pressed, false if it is not pressed. This program uses an ||logic:if|| to run one part of the program if the A button is pressed, and another part if it is not pressed.
How can I tell what key is being pressed on my keyboard?
For example, when pressing the Alt, Ctrl, or Shift key the On-Screen Keyboard will highlight the keys as pressed. Unfortunately, this program will not highlight any of the letter keys as they are pressed.
How do I keep track of the push button?
Second, a simple state-machine is needed to keep track of the button state but also if the return button action function, doReturnButton (), has already been called. The button is assumed to be connected from GND to pin4.
Both are only called once per push (transition high to low). To avoid the multiple transitions that occur when a button is pushed a debounce time period is used. The can also be done in hardware with a RC-circuit. This also demonstrates the callback on the release of the button.
