Why Nolock is used in SELECT queries?
The WITH (NOLOCK) table hint is used to override the default transaction isolation level of the table or the tables within the view in a specific query, by allowing the user to retrieve the data without being affected by the locks, on the requested data, due to another process that is changing it.
What is blocking in database?
As mentioned previously, in SQL Server, blocking occurs when one session holds a lock on a specific resource and a second SPID attempts to acquire a conflicting lock type on the same resource. Typically, the time frame for which the first SPID locks the resource is small. Locking in the Database Engine.
What is deadlock and blocking?
Blocking is different than a deadlock. Deadlocking is a condition that occurs when two users or sessions have locks on separate objects and each process is trying to acquire a lock on the object that the other process has. The SQL server automatically detects and resolves deadlocks.
Why is SQL Server select blocked with nolock?
If the rebuild is not specified as ONLINE (which you can’t do except on Enterprise Edition), the SELECT is blocked because of LCK_M_SCH_S, and if you execute sp_lock you will see it is an exclusive lock. Even NOLOCK can’t penetrate that.
When to use nolock in the SELECT statement?
By all means use WITH (NOLOCK) in SELECT statement on tables that have a clustered index, but it would be wiser to only do so if there’s a need to. Hint: The easiest way to add a clustered index to a table is to add an Id Primary Key column. The result set can contain rows that have not yet been committed, that are often later rolled back.
How does the with ( nolock ) table hint work?
In other words, the WITH (NOLOCK) table hint retrieves the rows without waiting for the other queries, that are reading or modifying the same data, to finish its processing. This is similar to the READ UNCOMMITTED transaction isolation level, that allows the query to see the data changes before committing the transaction that is changing it.
Are there any side effects to using nolock?
Nolocks should be used with extreme caution. The most common understanding of nolock (read uncommitted) hint is that it reads data that has not been committed yet. However, there are other side effects that can be very dangerous. (search for “nolock” and “page splits”)
