How are submenus related to the main menu in WordPress?
Under each main menu item I have specific dropdown submenus related to that main menu. Main menu = wordpress pages. Submenus = blog categories linked/added to main menu. This, so I can “divide” my blog (categories) into different pages instead of just having all blog categories and posts on one page.

The submenu is just an nested unordered list. To change how the menu appear you would have to override the styles applied to them. It would probably be best to start by creating a child theme and doing a rewrite for the menu system in the style.css file.
