What does a Hanning window do?
Hanning is the most commonly used window function for random signals because it provides good frequency resolution and leakage protection with fair amplitude accuracy.
Is Hanning window a filter?
Program 7.14 enables one to design FIR filters via the window method using the window functions such as the rectangular window, triangular window, Hanning window, Hamming window, and Blackman window. Filter types of the design include lowpass, highpass, bandpass, and bandstop.
What is effect of windowing?
Windowing reduces the amplitude of the discontinuities at the boundaries of each finite sequence acquired by the digitizer. No window is often called the uniform or rectangular window because there is still a windowing effect.
When is a Hanning window is not useful?
The Hanning window (and most windows) are not useful however if the frequency spacing between components is less than the window’s bandwidth. Unless a longer duration signal can be analyzed, a rectangular window would then perform better. Table 1 summarizes the main characteristics of some popular windows. Figure 7.
How is the OFDM symbol extended in a Hanning window?
By extending the OFDM symbol with a windowed version of the signal, eg, a Hanning window, w(t) = (1 − cos (2πtf0)) / 2, the out-of-band spectrum can be narrowed but with the penalty of additional overhead and the resulting loss in data rate.
What kind of windows are used in narrowband applications?
In between the extremes are moderate windows, such as Hamming and Hann. They are commonly used in narrowband applications, such as the spectrum of a telephone channel.
How to plot BER for different channels with and without windowing?
Plot of BER for different channels for a 128 subcarrier OFDM system with and without windowing. The cyclic prefix size is Δ = 12 samples and the width of the window wings is α = 6 samples. In this case, the windowing is part of the OFDM symbol, so the length does not change.
