What Ping means?
Ping (latency is the technically more correct term) means the time it takes for a small data set to be transmitted from your device to a server on the Internet and back to your device again. Note that ping refers to two-way latency (aka round-trip delay), a value relevant for Internet usage.
What is game communication?
In-game chat is usually text- or voice-based. Players can type message or transmit their voices through the game and other people in the game can choose to read or hear it. In-game chat doesn’t involve video. You won’t be able to see the faces of the people you are chatting with.
How do video games affect communication?
“Young people said that playing video games helps them to build social connections both ‘in real life’ and online,” the researchers said. Stronger communication and social connections make for improved mental well-being, the researchers concluded.
What should you know about networking and online games?
Networking and Online Games concisely draws together and illustrates the overlapping and interacting technical concerns of these sectors. The text explains the principles behind modern multiplayer communication systems and the techniques underlying contemporary networked games.
What are the three components of game networking?
There are mainly three components in game networking: Transport protocol: how to transport the data between clients and the server? Application protocol: what to send from clients to the server and from the server to clients and in which format? Application logic: how to use the exchanged data to update clients and the server?
What do you need to know about network networking?
Of course this is an overly simplistic explanation and glosses over many subtle points, but it gets across the basic idea of how networking for RTS games work. You can read more about this networking model here: 1500 Archers on a 28.8: Network Programming in Age of Empires and Beyond.
Why do we need latency in game networking?
The next limitation is that in order to ensure that the game plays out identically on all machines it is necessary to wait until all player’s commands for that turn are received before simulating that turn. This means that each player in the game has latency equal to the most lagged player.
