How is the texture coordinate used in DirectX 12?
A texture coordinate is used to determine the position within the texture to sample from. When sampling from the texture, the texture coordinate (in each dimension of the texture) is usually normalized in the range [0⋯1] where (0, 0) is the top-left of the texture and (1, 1) is the bottom-right of the texture.
Is the mipmap generated in DirectX 12 automatically?
The mipmap at level 1 is half the size of the mipmap at level 0 and at level 2 is half the size of level 1 and so on. DirectX 12 no longer provides a method to automatically generate the mipmaps for a texture. It is the responsibility of the graphics programmer to generate the mipmaps for a texture.
How are textures mapped to the vertices of a mesh?
In order to map a 2D texture to the vertices of the mesh, then each vertex must define two components for the texture coordinates. These components are usually referred to the UV texture coordinates ( or S, and T in other graphics APIs).
What are the functions of the directxtex library?
The functions provided by the DirectXTex library provide direct access to the DXGI_FORMAT of the loaded texture which requires less code to convert the format of the texture from the library specific format to the DXGI equivalent.
How does Texture2D work in Shader Model 4?
Texture2D type ( as it exists in Shader Model 4) plus resource variables. This texture object supports the following methods in addition to the methods in Shader Model 4. Returns the four texel values that would be used in a bi-linear filtering operation.
How are the coordinates of a texture determined?
The texture coordinates for a mesh are usually determined using a process called UV mapping. A visual artist uses 3D content creation software such as Autodesk’s 3D Studio Max or Maya, or Blender to map the 2D texture onto a 3D model.
How to load a texture from a file?
To load a texture, you must create a texture and a texture view. This topic shows how to use Windows Imaging Component (WIC) to create the texture and the view separately. This topic is useful for images that you create as simple 2D textures. For more complex resources, use DDS.
How are textures used in physically based renderers?
Textures can be used to store any type of information that is useful for the graphics programmer. For example, in a physically based renderer (PBR) textures are used to store how “metalic” the object is is or how “rough” the surface is.
