How to find polygons within polygon using ArcGIS Desktop?

How to find polygons within polygon using ArcGIS Desktop?

I am new to GIS and ArcGIS. I have a set of polygons, some of which enclose other polygons. They are lake polygons, and within lake polygons, are smaller island polygons. If I have a given lake polygon, how can I select or get a list of enclosed island polygons?

How to create rectangular grids within a polygon?

In ArcMap, add the desired polygon layers to the data frame. In this example, the sandstone and gravel polygon layers are added. The blue lines represent the boundaries of the polygons. Use the Create Fishnet tool from Data Management > Samplings to create rectangular grids within the desired polygon.

How do you find what is inside a polygon?

Finding what is inside a polygon. A spatial join joins the attributes of two layers based on the location of the features in the layers. Like joining two tables by matching attribute values in a field, a spatial join appends the attributes of one layer to another.

How are polygons assigned to a target layer?

By spatially joining, you are assigning attributes from a source layer (here lakes) to the target layer based on how the layers overlap/contain/intersect one another. All island features will theoretically be assigned to the lake they fall within.

How to select list of enclosed Island polygons?

How does ArcGIS geoprocessing tool polygon neighbors work?

How the ArcGIS geoprocessing tool Polygon Neighbors finds neighbors and populates the output table. The neighboring relationships are defined as follows: Overlapping neighbors—polygons that have all or part of their areas overlapping Edge neighbors—polygons that have common or touching boundaries

How to construct polygons from the shapes of other features?

Select the features you want to use to construct new polygons. Click Construct Polygons on the Advanced Editing toolbar. Choose the target in which the new feature will be created. If you have feature templates for the layers in your map, click the Template button and click the template to use to create the new feature.
