How to create labels in data driven pages?
Do not check the layer named ‘Labels’ that was created in Step 1. Click Apply > OK to close the dialog. When viewing the map, the layer that is excluded should extend beyond the index layer and not be labeled. The layer created with labels should only be drawn within the index layer with labels applied.
How can I create a data driven page?
There are two geoprocessing tools available from the Data Driven Pages toolset in the Cartography toolbox to help you create an index layer: Grid Index Features and Strip Map Index Features. When using point features, if you want to use only one map scale for each page, choose the Center and Maintain Current Scale option.
How is page name defined in data driven pages?
As Data Driven Pages iterates through the features in the index layer and each page is defined, the attribute value for the chosen name field is used as the page name. The page name can be displayed on the Data Driven Pages toolbar. This can also drive a dynamic text element in the layout.
How to use point features in data driven pages?
When using point features, if you want to use only one map scale for each page, choose the Center and Maintain Current Scale option. Then, after exiting the Setup Data Driven Pages dialog box, set the scale of the Detail Data Frame to the scale you want.
You may want to create Data Driven Pages, based on a route, such as a highway, or along a river as seen in the strip map example below. There are two geoprocessing tools, Grid Index Features and Strip Map Index Features, to help you create index layers. These tools are part of the Data Driven Pages toolset.
How are data driven pages used in ArcGIS?
A feature layer, or index layer, divides the map into sections based on each index feature in the layer and generates one page per index feature. In order to use Data Driven Pages to build a map book you need to use Arcpy.mapping.
What kind of information is included in the index layer?
This information includes text for page titles, page numbers, labels for neighboring pages (a neighboring page is one that is geographically adjacent to the current page), and other index layer attributes.
How are page names defined in data driven pages?
Each page in the map series needs a name, and the names are taken from this field. As Data Driven Pages iterates through the features in the index layer and each page is defined, the attribute value for the chosen name field is used as the page name.
How to create dynamic text in data driven pages?
If you wish to create dynamic text elements based on a combination of the contents of multiple index layer fields and your own text, use the layer’s display expression. This corresponds to the current value of a selected attribute of the index layer for the given data driven page. This includes fields joined to the index layer.
How to create a series of data driven pages?
You can choose any data frame in your map as the Detail Data Frame (as long as there is at least one layer in it). To create a series of Data Driven Pages, select the index layer from the Layer drop-down list. The default index layer is the topmost polygon layer of the active data frame.
Why is the index layer called data driven pages?
The index layer contains the “data” that “drives” the creation of the pages in the series – hence the name “Data Driven Pages”. The index layer can also be used to define a number of other things that can be added to the maps, including the page name, page number, map scale, rotation angle of the data frame, and coordinate system.
