How do I change the datum in ArcMap?
Procedure
- In ArcMap, go to View > Data Frame Properties dialog.
- Select the Coordinate System tab.
- Click the Transformations button at the bottom of the dialog (in older versions of the software, the Transformations button appears on the right.)
- Select one of the listed transformations.
What datum does ArcGIS use?
The projection in ArcGIS Online is set by the basemap you are using. If you are using one of the default basemaps, the projection is WGS 84 Web Mercator Auxiliary Sphere. Likely, the Canadian data you are working with is not projected in WGS 84 Web Mercator Auxiliary Sphere (more on that later).
How do you convert to datum?
In a datum transformation, coordinates in both the “from” datum and the “to” datum are converted from latitude-longitude into three-dimensional cartesian coordinate space. Next, the math is done to align the coordinates. Finally, the coordinates are translated back into the latitude-longitude values of the “to” datum.
Why do we use datum in GIS?
While a spheroid approximates the shape of the earth, a datum defines the position of the spheroid relative to the center of the earth. A datum provides a frame of reference for measuring locations on the surface of the earth. It defines the origin and orientation of latitude and longitude lines.
How does projection on the fly work in ArcGIS?
All of the coordinates are permanently converted. Projection on the fly performs the same process as the Project tool, only the data does not change. It is merely displayed in the new coordinate system temporarily. Projection on the fly is what ArcGIS does to resolve conflicts when your data is in a different coordinate system than your map.
When are datasets are projected on the fly?
Data is projected on the fly anytime a data frame contains a layer whose coordinate system is defined as something different from the coordinate system definition of the data frame. A data frame’s coordinate system can be defined manually or by adding data with a defined coordinate system.
How does ArcMap display data on the fly?
ArcMap can perform on-the-fly projection, which means that it can display data stored in one projection as if it were in another projection. The new projection is used for display and query purposes only; the actual data is not altered.
How to warn about transformations in ArcGIS Pro?
Want ArcGIS Pro to warn you when you’re using a transformation, like ArcMap does? Go to the Project tab > Options > Map and Scene > Spatial Reference and check the box for Warn if transformation between geographic coordinate system is required to align data sources correctly.
