What is NASA DEM?
A new global digital elevation model (DEM) has been released. NASADEM is a reprocessing of Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) data to improve height accuracy and to infill missing elevation data.
How are DEM created?
DEMs can also be extracted from topographic contour maps, but their accuracy is only as good as the original maps. Today, DEMs are usually generated from remotely sensed data sets collected either from an aircraft (airplane, helicopter or unmanned aircraft / drone) or spacecraft (satellite or Space Shuttle).
What format is DEM?
A DEM dataset is a single file comprising 1024-byte ASCII-encoded (text) blocks that fall into three record categories called A, B, and C. There is no cross-platform ambiguity since line ending control codes are not used, and all data, including numbers, is represented in readable text form.

Which is better NASA GDEM or NASA nasadem?
At one-arcsecond, NASADEM will be superior to GDEM across almost all SRTM coverage areas, but will integrate GDEM and other data to extend the coverage. Meanwhile, DEMs from the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt Tandem-X mission are being developed as part of a public-private partnership.
How are nasadem datasets different from SRTM data?
The improvements were achieved by reprocessing the original SRTM radar signal data and telemetry data with updated algorithms and auxiliary data not available at the time of the original SRTM processing. How are new data layers used in nasadem?
In addition, we will provide several new data layers not publicly available from the original SRTM processing: interferometric coherence, radar backscatter, radar incidence angle to enable radiometric correction, and a radar backscatter image mosaic to be used as a layer for global classification of land cover and land use.
