Can a hosting server be an ArcGIS database?
In versions 10.5.1 and earlier, enterprise geodatabases were supported for use as the managed database for a hosting server. At ArcGIS Enterprise 10.6, this is no longer supported. You must use an ArcGIS Data Store relational data store.

You can create custom navigation maps with your organization’s assets, locators, and roads in ArcGIS Pro 1.2 or later. You need ArcGIS Pro 1.4 or later to create your own travel modes and use feature editing templates. Mobile map packages can be created and shared with the Create Mobile Map Package and Share Package tools.
To enable the inspections, you need to create a map inspectors can use in Navigator that contains the stores, roads, and a custom travel mode that produces walking directions to stores. To provide the map the inspectors need, you’ll use ArcGIS Pro.

At ArcGIS Enterprise 10.6, this is no longer supported. You must use an ArcGIS Data Store relational data store. You can still register an enterprise geodatabase with the ArcGIS GIS Server site, but you cannot configure the enterprise geodatabase as a managed database.
How to register your data with ArcGIS Server?
The way you register your databases and data directories with ArcGIS Server in Server Manager is through the Data Stores tab in the GIS Server module. To access this tab, sign in to Server Manager and click Site > GIS Server > Data Stores. The Data Stores tab features the Registered Data Stores dialog box.

For each additional data store type you require, install ArcGIS Data Store on a separate machine and create that data store.
