How is elevation calculated on GPS?
The GPS uses height (h) above the reference ellipsoid that approximates the earth’s surface. The traditional, orthometric height (H) is the height above an imaginary surface called the geoid, which is determined by the earth’s gravity and approximated by MSL. MSL is defined as the zero elevation for a local area.

There are 72 x 24 tiles, each about a 20mb zip file that decompresses to a 72.1mb 16bit TIF file (6001×6001 pixels). That’s ~120 gb, which is more than I can store.
How can I see elevation on my route?
Hover the mouse over any part of the profile to see information like elevation and grade. You’ll also see a blue dot appear along the route that corresponds to the location on the elevation profile. In the upper left corner of the elevation profile you will see ELE and GRADE buttons. Click these, and the graph will overlay the respective info.
