Do routers add frames?
Yes. A router must strip off the layer-2 frame in order to get to the layer-3 packet. The router then routes the packet to the next interface toward the destination, based on the layer-3 destination address.
What happens when the router receives the frame from the host device?
The frame is received by the Switch. The Switch forwards the frame to the default gateway, which, in the most of the cases, would be your router. The router receives the packet and removes the network layer header. After removing the header, it looks at the destination IP address in the packet.
What is Ethernet frame switching?
What an Ethernet Switch Does. Ethernet switches link Ethernet devices together by relaying Ethernet frames between the devices connected to the switches. By moving Ethernet frames between the switch ports, a switch links the traffic carried by the individual network connections into a larger Ethernet network.
How do routers communicate with each other?
Routers tell each other routes to subnetworks; only the local routers need to be able to send to specific machines (and that’s what MAC addresses and ARP are for). Routers talk to each other about routes via BGP; from time to some, some ISP messes up there and large chunks of the internet cease to work.
What is the difference between packets and frames?
The main difference between a packet and a frame is the association with the OSI layers. While a packet is the unit of data used in the network layer, a frame is the unit of data used in the OSI model’s data link layer. A frame contains more information about the transmitted message than a packet.
Does a switch change the frame?
You are correct; switches do not modify the frames they forward in any way.
What happens immediately after an Ethernet switch receives an Ethernet frame?
When the switch receives the frame, it immediately forwards that frame to Port 4.
Can 2 routers talk to each other?
Each hop/router makes a forwarding decision based on the routes it knows about. Routers that are supposed to talk to each other need a common connection. This can be a direct 1:1 physical link, a tunnel, or a network (often Ethernet) they are both connected to (like a common link segment at an Internet exchange).
What exact differences are there between a router and gateways?
A router is a device that is capable of sending and receiving data packets between computer networks, also creating an overlay network. A Gateway, on the other hand, joins dissimilar systems. Gateway it is defined as a network entity that allows a network to interface with another network with different protocols.
Are packets carried inside frames?
Packets are carried inside frames. Notice that there are two addresses: the network address and the link address. The basic idea is that the network address on the packet is the final destination.
How does a router send frames or packets?
That is what the router is doing. It forwards packets from one interface to another interface (one network to another network). Also, when you ping a domain name, you have “packets transmitted, received”. Is it an abuse of language?
What makes a router a host or a host?
Rather, it identifies a system that is “hosting” data or service (s). A router could be considered a host in the proper context. A router could, although there is more clear terminology for it, be considered a host for a specific route to a said subnet that needs the route.
How does a L2 router send frames or packets?
L2 router needs to decapsulate packet data from it’s framing headers (and trailers) on source port, then reencapsulate it in another frame for sending on outgoing port.
Can a router send frames with MAC addresses?
If the connection between the two routers is an IEEE protocol, then, yes, you will see frames with MAC addresses. If it is frame relay, you will see frames with DLCIs; with ATM, you will see frames with VPI/VCI; etc.
