What is VXLAN flood and learn?
VXLAN is designed in order to provide the same Ethernet Layer 2 network services as VLAN. VXLAN encapsulates MAC address over UDP packet which makes a Layer 2 packet carried over a Layer 3 network. So, it is basically a MAC-in-UDP header. In this document, VXLAN flood and learn is described.
How does ARP work in VXLAN?
The ARP broadcast leverages the multidestination traffic forwarding implementation of the VXLAN fabric. When the queried endpoint responds to the ARP request, the endpoint generates an ARP response.
What is VTI in VXLAN?
A VXLAN header that includes a 24-bit field—called the VXLAN network identifier (VNI)—that is used to uniquely identify the VXLAN. The VNI is similar to a VLAN ID, but having 24 bits allows you to create many more VXLANs than VLANs.
What is VXLAN ARP suppression?
Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) suppression is a technique used to reduce the amount of ARP broadcast flooding within individual VXLAN segments, that is between VMs connected to the same logical switch.
What is the benefit of VXLAN?
VXLAN provides the following advantages: Increases scalability in virtualized cloud environments as the VXLAN ID is 24 bits, which enables you to create up to 16 million isolated networks. This overcomes the limitation of VLANs having the 12 bits VLAN ID, which enables you to create a maximum of 4094 isolated networks.
Does VXLAN replace VLAN?
When a switch performs the VTEP functions, it is referred to as a VxLAN Gateway. The switches can perform VxLAN encapsulation/decapsulation and can also translate the VLAN ID to VNI.
How does MP-BGP VPN support a VXLAN overlay network?
• Leverages the decade-long MP-BGP VPN technology to support scalable multi-tenant VXLAN overlay networks. • EVPN address family carries both Layer 2 and Layer 3 reachability information. This provides integrated bridging and routing in VXLAN overlay networks.
What are the different types of EVPN routes?
EVPN Route Types BGP EVPN Route Types Type 1 – Ethernet Auto-Discovery (A-D) route ! Type 2 – MAC advertisement route “L2 VNI MAC/MAC-IP Type 3 – Inclusive Multicast Route “EVPN IR, Peer Discovery Type 4 – Ethernet Segment Route !
What is the definition of a VXLAN overlay?
- A VXLAN Overlay or VXLAN segment is a Layer-2 broadcast domain identified by the VNID that extends or tunnels traffic from one VTEP to another. • VXLAN Tunnel End Point (VTEP)
What are the interfaces of a VXLAN tunnel end point?
• VXLAN Tunnel End Point (VTEP) - A VTEP is a device that provides both encapsulation and de-capsulation of classical Ethernet and VXLAN packets to and from a VXLAN segment - Each VTEP may have the following types of interfaces: Switchport interfaces on the local LAN segment to support local endpoints !
