Why does ping work but not traceroute?
Most probably the pong from ping is blocked/gets discarded, while traceroute uses an error message form a node/hop to determine the route. Traceroute is not a standard tool, in that it uses a trick to get the information.
What does it mean if traceroute fails?
There are several possible reasons a traceroute fails to reach the target server: The traceroute packets are blocked or rejected by a router in the path. Usually, the router immediately after the last visible hop is the one causing the blockage. Check the routing table and the status of this device.
Will traceroute work if ping is disabled?
By default traceroute sends UDP packets to track the route to a given host, while ping uses ICMP. But traceroute works processing ICMP packets returned by the routers in the route to the destination host. This means that if you only block outgoing ICMP packets, ping won’t work but traceroute will.
What is the relationship between ping and traceroute?
The main difference between Ping and Traceroute is that Ping is a quick and easy utility to tell if the specified server is reachable and how long will it take to send and receive data from the server whereas Traceroute finds the exact route taken to reach the server and time taken by each step (hop).
Can firewall block traceroute?
1 Answer. There is no “blocking” of traceroute, tracepath, tracert or whatever the tool gets called. These commands work by setting the TTL/hoplimit of the packet to a specific value and then expect the host to send an ICMP unreachable back if the TTL/hoplimit expired (i.e. decremented to zero).
Why is my traceroute timing out?
A “Request timed out” message at the beginning of a traceroute is very common and can be ignored. This is typically a device that doesn’t respond to ICMP or traceroute requests, as shown in Hop 2. Example Hop 2: 2 * * * Request timed out.
How do I check if my ping is disabled?
If it’s a local ping (you can’t ping your GW), take a look at the arp tables. After trying to ping, run “arp -na” to see if you got a MAC address for the IP you tried to ping. You can also try arping to to see if that works. But you’ll get the same information by pinging your gateway and then checking the arp tables.
Does traceroute use ping?
On a Windows system, traceroute uses ICMP. As with ping , traceroute can be blocked by not responding to the protocol/port being used. Traceroute displays the ICMP message’s source address as the name of the hop and moves on to the next hop.
Can you disable traceroute?
Traceroute succeeds because of UDP transmission. You cannot block ICMP out bound either because the ICMP message will be coming from the router itself. So you can use CoPP to block ICMP messages originating from the router and still block traceroute. traceroute relies on both UDP and ICMP to work effectively.
How to troubleshoot your connections with Ping and traceroute?
Troubleshooting with PING. Lets take a look at the behavior of the ping command with the help of Ethereal application. First, to launch the ping command the simplest way is to open a command prompt window and type in PING [ip address of the host to reach], or if DNS service is running type in PING [URL of the destination host].
Why is my Cisco traceroute not working properly?
Traceroute on the other hand sends ICMP packets with increasing TTLs so each L3 device along the path has to send a response to source IP. So it could be acls, firewalls, router configurations etc. that are stopping the traceroute from working correctly.
What does it mean if I can ping a router successfully?
If I can ping a router successfully, why is it that when I do traceroute, it stops at a particular interface and says “ICMP type:3, code:3, Destination port unreachable”. Doesn’t that mean that it can’t make a connection?
How to troubleshoot your connections with Ping and TTL?
It replies back to the sender with an ICMP Time exceeded message, including its source address in the SA field of the IP header (SA=172.16.1.2). RouterA receives the response and prints out on the screen the first hop (IP address=172.16.1.2). Afterwars, RouterA sends the same echo request message with TTL value=2.
