A switch does not share its CAM table with others. If multiple switches are used in the network, each of them will use its own CAM table to take the forwarding decision.
Do all switches on a network have the same MAC address table?
Each switch maintains its own MAC address table. For instance, suppose you have Switch 1 and Switch 2 connected together of their ports 24, and MAC address 0123.4567. 89ab comes into Switch 1 port 5. On switch 1, the MAC address table would reflect that MAC address 0123.4567.
Can a switch learn multiple MAC addresses against same port?
You can configure a multi-port unicast MAC address table entry to associate a unicast MAC address with multiple ports, so that packets that match the entry is delivered to multiple destination ports.
Is it possible to synchronize MAC address tables?
Synchronizing MAC address tables across switches doesn’t make any sense. Each switch maintains its own MAC address table. For instance, suppose you have Switch 1 and Switch 2 connected together of their ports 24, and MAC address 0123.4567.89ab comes into Switch 1 port 5.
How are MAC addresses recorded on a VLAN?
When a broadcast packet is sent from a MAC address that packet will be processed by every switch in the VLAN and hence it’s MAC address will be recorded by every switch in the VLAN. So under normal circumstances you would expect all the switches on a VLAN to have pretty much the same list of MAC addresses in their switching table for that VLAN.
Why do Cisco switches have multiple MAC addresses?
Cisco switches use the MAC address table to “learn” MAC addresses of devices on ports to reduce discovery broadcasts once the entry is added to the MAC table. If more than one device is attached to a single port on the switch (maybe through a hub) then the MAC table will have multiple MAC addresses (for each device on the single port).
How many MAC addresses does a L2 switch have?
So an L2 Switch has only one MAC address regardless of the number of ports it has, and that MAC address is used only while we are accessing the switch through GUI or management VLAN . Anyone who has a different view plz make thier posts.
