What protocol does mDNS use?
multicast UDP
An mDNS message is a multicast UDP packet sent using the following addressing: IPv4 address 224.0….Queries.
| Field | Description | Length bits |
|---|---|---|
| UNICAST-RESPONSE | Boolean flag indicating whether a unicast-response is desired | 1 |
Is mDNS a protocol?
The Multicast Domain Name System (mDNS) protocol, is a a zero-configuration and multi-platform service designed to resolve host names to IP addresses within small networks that do not have a local DNS server. mDNS listens on port 5353/UDP.
Is Bonjour the same as mDNS?
Bonjour is Apple’s version of Zeroconf – it is mDNS with DNS-SD. Apple devices will advertise their services via IPv4 and IPv6 simultaneously (IPv6 link local and Globally Unique).
Is DHCP a zeroconf protocol?
Zeroconf is only used if DHCP is not available, since it is located on clients machine. When DHCP is available again, the Zeroconf releases its assigned IP and uses the one provided by DHCP server. IPv4LL (IPv4 Link Local) protocol is used for address assignment when computers are locally connected.
What port is mDNS?
port 5353/
mDNS uses port 5353/udp.
What is mDNS vs DNS?
mDNS operate at local network level unlike conventional DNS which operates at global level. It works in conjunction with DNS-SD (service discovery) protocol in zeroconf network. Multicast DNS works at link local level and hence every node can be reached without routing. mDNS packet will not be forwarded by any router.
What is mDNS traffic?
What is mDNS? mDNS (Multicast Domain Name Service) is a name service feature created primarily for small home networks and small office networks. This service allows network devices to connect through the use of common names “Suzie’s Computer”.
What programs use Bonjour?
Notable applications using Bonjour include:
- iTunes to find shared music.
- iPhoto to find shared photos.
- iChat, Adobe Systems Creative Suite 3, Proteus, Adium, Fire, Pidgin, Skype, Vine Server, and Elgato EyeTV to communicate with multiple clients.
- Gizmo5 to find other users on the local network.
How does Bonjour protocol work?
Bonjour uses a cache of Multicast DNS records to prevent hosts from requesting information that has already been requested. For example, when one host requests, say, a list of LPR print spoolers, the list of printers comes back via multicast, so all local hosts see it.
What is IPv4LL?
avahi-autoipd implements IPv4LL, “Dynamic Configuration of IPv4 Link-Local Addresses” (IETF RFC3927), a protocol for automatic IP address configuration from the link-local 169.254. 0.0/16 range without the need for a central server. It is primarily intended to be used in ad-hoc networks which lack a DHCP server.
