What protocol does traceroute use by default?
Traceroute most commonly uses Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) echo packets with variable time to live (TTL) values. The response time of each hop is calculated. To guarantee accuracy, each hop is queried multiple times (usually three times) to better measure the response of that particular hop.
What UDP port does traceroute use?
UDP port 33434
Cisco’s implementation of traceroute also uses a sequence of UDP datagrams, each with incrementing TTL values, to an invalid port number at the remote host; by default, UDP port 33434 is used.
What are the similarities and differences between ping and traceroute?
The main difference between Ping and Traceroute is that Ping is a quick and easy utility to tell if the specified server is reachable and how long will it take to send and receive data from the server whereas Traceroute finds the exact route taken to reach the server and time taken by each step (hop).
How does traceroute work with UDP ( on packet level )?
Basically when a traceroute is issued on a Cisco device it would initiate traffic sourcing from a random port to the destination port UDP/33434 (UDP port 33434 is the first one used by traceroute as the destination port) and it will increment that destination port number until the datagram is received by the final destination.
Which is the default protocol for ICMP traceroute?
Traceroute relies on sending out probes with controlled TTL and monitoring the ICMP time exceeded errors that come back. The probes can be any protocol. Windows uses ICMP echo packets by default. Most unix-like systems uses UDP packets by default.
Which is traceroute tool does penetration testers use?
Tools such as tcptraceroute are common in a penetration testers toolbox and might be found on a savvy network administrators system. Traceroute relies on sending out probes with controlled TTL and monitoring the ICMP time exceeded errors that come back.
What happens to TTL value on UDP datagrams?
Wouldn’t it be sufficient to just increment the TTL value, while keeping the port number unchanged, say, 33434, or any other from the allowed range? When each one of those UDP datagrams goes through a router the TTL value is decremented and if it reaches zero, then the router returns an ICMP Time Exceeded Message, also known as ICMP Type 11.
