What is the role of RP in multicast?
A rendezvous point (RP) is a role that a device performs when operating in Protocol Independent Multicast (PIM) Sparse Mode (SM). An RP acts as the meeting place for sources and receivers of multicast data. In a PIM-SM network, sources must send their traffic to the RP.
How do I enable multicast on Cisco router?
Perform these configurations to enable multicast routing on a router:
- Issue the ip multicast-routing command globally on the router.
- Enable PIM sparse or dense mode, by issuing the ip pim sparse-dense-mode command on all the multicast interfaces.
- In the case of sparse mode, a Rendezvous Point (RP) is to be configured.
Why is PIM SM more efficient?
PIM-SM uses shared trees by default and implements source-based trees for efficiency; it assumes that no hosts want the multicast traffic unless they specifically ask for it. It creates a shared distribution tree centered on a defined rendezvous point (RP).
Which multicast group is used for all PIM routers?
All PIM protocols share a common control message format. PIM control messages are sent as raw IP datagrams (protocol number 103), either multicast to the link-local ALL PIM ROUTERS multicast group, or unicast to a specific destination.
How does Protocol Independent Multicast ( PIM ) work?
The routers use Protocol Independent Multicast (PIM) to dynamically create a multicast distribution tree. The video data stream will then be delivered only to the network segments that are in the path between the source and the receivers. This process is further explained in the following sections. Multicast is based on the concept of a group.
What does the RP do in a PIM-SM?
An RP acts as the meeting place for sources and receivers of multicast data. In a PIM-SM network, sources must send their traffic to the RP. This traffic is then forwarded to receivers down a shared distribution tree.
Do you need a RP for PIM dense mode?
An RP is required only in networks running PIM SM. In the PIM-SM model, only network segments with active receivers that have explicitly requested multicast data will be forwarded the traffic. This method of delivering multicast data is in contrast to PIM Dense Mode (PIM DM).
How does any source multicast flow work in Cisco?
After the PIM JOIN it complete the process to create a Hardware Forwarding State for Multicast traffic flow. If there are (*,G) listeners, the RP starts constructing SPT toward the multicast source IP address. This is where the RPF check is performed to find out the upstream interface to send the PIM Join to. Step 5.
