Can the government use the census against you?
It is against the law for anyone to share personal census information. No one can be identified from the census and your information can never be used to target you. It would be against the law and contrary to our most important principle: to protect the confidentiality of all information.
Why is the Census Bureau calling me?
The Census Bureau conducts over 100 surveys other than the 2020 Census. If your address was selected to participate in one of these surveys, we may call you to participate. Some surveys are done exclusively by phone. We might also call you if we do not find you at home or when a personal visit is not convenient.
Is Census Bureau survey required by law?
Is this survey mandatory? Yes. Your response is required by law. Title 13 of the U.S. Code requires businesses and other organizations that receive the questionnaire(s) to answer the questions and return the report(s) to the Census Bureau.
Does the census ask for your social security number?
The Census Bureau will never ask for your full Social Security number, bank account or credit card numbers, money or donations, or anything on behalf of a political party. The 2020 Census will not ask citizenship status. The Census Bureau may call or email you as part of their follow-up and quality control efforts.
What happens if I refuse the census?
No, you won’t. You still have time to complete. We will be contacting households who haven’t completed in the coming weeks. You may be fined if you refuse to complete the Census after receiving a Notice of Direction or submit an incomplete form.
How can I find out if my IP address is on the blacklist?
If your IP address has been blacklisted and you want to investigate, you’ll need to visit the blacklist’s website and do a lookup on your IP address. Most blacklist databases will provide general listing reasons, but don’t list specific email addresses tied to blacklisted IP addresses.
Where can I find census data by topic?
While many data tables are now available in data.census.gov, you can browse and download additional data tables by topic and year. CBB is a suite of services that provide selected demographic and economic data tailored to specific types of users in a simple to access and use format.
What does the Census Bureau Interactive Data Hub do?
The Census Bureau has released an updated version of the interactive data hub on its COVID-19 resource page. The CIC Program provides local access, education and technical assistance on census data for planning and decision-making to underserved communities.
