Is Debian free for commercial use?
Q: Can I say You must not use the program for commercial purposes ? A: This is non-free. We want businesses to be able to use Debian for their computing needs. A business should be able to use any program in Debian without checking its license.
Is Debian better than Ubuntu?
Debian is a much lightweight system, which makes it super fast. As Debian comes bare minimum and is not bundled or prepacked with additional software and features, it makes it super fast and lightweight than Ubuntu. One important thing to note is that Ubuntu may be less stable than Debian.
Can I use Debian for commercial?
Yes. While all the main components of Debian are free software, we provide a non-free directory for programs that are not freely redistributable. This is nothing new: free and commercial software are distributed on the same CD by many manufacturers now.
Is Debian free software?
Debian’s Social Contract states the goal of making Debian entirely free software, and Debian conscientiously keeps nonfree software out of the official Debian system. However, Debian also maintains a repository of nonfree software.
Does Debian cost money?
Although Debian believes in free software, there are cases where people want or need to put non-free software on their machine. Whenever possible Debian will support this. There are even a growing number of packages whose sole job is to install non-free software into a Debian system.
Who is the copyright holder of Debian packaging files?
There are three exceptions. All the Debian packaging files have copyright held by the packager, and further one specific file providing a new feature has a different grant of license. Finally, there are some manual pages added to the package, with copyright held by a third person.
Is there a GPL Version 3 for Debian?
There are issues with shipping GPLv2-only software with a CDDL operating system such as Nexenta. The GPL version 3 solves this issue, but not all GPL software can switch to it and we have no way to know how much of Debian should be stripped from such a system.
