- Apply the interfacing to the wrong side of the back facings.
- Sew the front and back top to the shoulder gusset.
- Attach the back facing to both of the center back tops.
- Topstitch the facings along the outer edge.
- Sew buttonhole at the markings.
- Finish the front and back necklines.
What is a Buttonstand?
A fitting line is anywhere where a pattern closes, with a closure, for example a zip, or a button stand. It is very important to maintain the fit of the garment, when adding a zip or button stand or any other type of closure.
What is button placket?
The shirt placket refers to the part of your shirt where the buttonholes are placed. Located at the center front, plackets are almost always made with more than one layer of fabric. In the past, plackets were entirely separate pieces of cloth that were sewn to the front; today, the edges are simply folded.
In modern usage, the term placket often refers to the double layers of fabric that hold the buttons and buttonholes in a shirt. Plackets can also be found at the neckline of a shirt, the cuff of a sleeve, or at the waist of a skirt or pair of trousers.
How to Make a Hidden Button Placket
- Create the buttonhole placket. Cut the garment’s front right half; transfer all the markings.
- Accordion-fold the front extension. Fold the extension along line 3, right sides together, so that line 4 aligns with line 2; press.
- Turn the extension back in place along line 4.

- Create a new right front pattern. Tape tissue paper to the pattern front, extending about 6 inches past the pattern’s front edge.

- Accordion-fold the front extension.

As its name suggests, a concealed button band is a type of placket where the buttons are hidden by the top layer of the placket and are invisible when it’s buttoned up. This type of button band can be used on a variety of garments- shirts, skirts, dresses and pants.
The above pic shows a shirt dress with a separate front button stand. This is a great example as you can see that the button stand has been cut on the opposite direction of the stripes of the yoke when compared to the lower body.
How to create a separate button stand on the Sedona shirt?
Step 1. Using the front pattern piece cut along the 2nd marked “FOLDLINE” and separate. Discard the right hand section you have cut off. Step 2. Draw a vertical line 3cms (1 1/4″) in from first marked FOLDLINE which is the equivalent to 1.5cms (5/8″) in from marked CENTRE FRONT LINE.
