How much current can relay handle?
To stay within the power rating, a signal with a maximum voltage of 250V, should have a current of no more than 240mA. Most relays, therefore, have a complex useful working area. The higher the switched voltage, the lower the maximum switch current must be for a relay to handle it safely.
How many cycles can a relay have?
Relays feature an electrical life of 100,000 cycles.
Do relays wear out?
Relays fail for a variety of reasons (see article: What Causes a Relay to Fail). Mechanical relays, such as electromechanical relays and reed relays have shorter lifetimes than solid-state relays. The reason for this is that they simply wear out after millions of operations.
How reliable are relays?
Relays tend to be quite reliable in benign environments, however they have a limited lifetime. Typically something like 50,000-100,000 operations at full rated load. At lighter loads, the life will increase, generally up to many millions of operations with a negligible load (the so-called mechanical life).
Does a relay reduce voltage?
Relays control one electrical circuit by opening and closing contacts in another circuit. Nonetheless, relays can “control” larger voltages and amperes by having an amplifying effect because a small voltage applied to a relays coil can result in a large voltage being switched by the contacts.
Can a relay be switched on or off continuously?
There is no abrasion to the relay, as long as it is not switching. If it is switched or not switched for a long time, does not make any difference to the relay. Only the switching transition itself will reduce its lifetime. A relay is an electromechanical device, its contacts wear out quickly if the relay is switched on/off rapidly and repeatedly.
How are time delay relays different from control relays?
The difference between relays and time delay relays is when the output contacts open & close: on a control relay, it happens when voltage is applied and removed from the coil; on time delay relays, the contacts can open or close before or after some time delay. What should I look for in a relay?
Look for a high quality relay that has a rated maximum continuous coil voltage. As long as the voltage driving the coil stays below this value and the environment (temp, humidity, etc) stays within the rated ranges then you should expect to be able to drive the coil continuously for its rated lifetime.
Why are the contacts on my relay not opening?
One failure mode to consider is that relay contacts can become “stuck” shut. In this case, the relay does not open even though the coil is deenergized. This happens usually because of sparking across the contacts when they are connected to an inductive or high voltage load when they open.
