What is HDRI lighting?
HDRI is short for High Dynamic Range Image. It’s a panoramic photograph that covers the entire field of vision that contains a large amount of data which can be used to emit light into a CG scene. While lower range images calculate their light value between 0.0 and 1.0, HDRI lighting can reach a value of 100.0.
Is HDRI better than HDR?

What is the importance of HDRI lighting in 3D software?
HDR file retains the brightness of bulb correctly. It knows that the lamp’s light is much brighter than the rectangular area around it, but it is only one solid color in the JPG’s version. This means that when you use the image to light up the 3D scenes, the lamp will emit more light.
How to use HDRI light without background showing?
This is the shader setup I use to get the light from a HDRI environmental texture to show on my objects without seeing the actual background image. This setup allows you to have some control over the background color and strength without having to wrap your scene in another object like a cube or UV sphere.

How can I change the color of my HDRI?
I am using Cycles. Or you can use the Is Glossy Ray input from the Light Path node. With this setup, your World color stays the same, but reflection rays show your HDRI. Color 1 is your world background, Color 2 is your HDRI.
