Illegal Instruction errors occur when you try to run a program that was compiled with some processor-specific optimizations, and is then running on a processor that fails to meet those requirements.
What is SIGILL illegal instruction?
The SIGILL signal is raised when an attempt is made to execute an invalid, privileged, or ill-formed instruction. SIGILL is usually caused by a program error that overlays code with data or by a call to a function that is not linked into the program load module.

Why is this arm binary throwing an’illegal instruction’?
In case it’s relevant – All ldr instructions (0x796b8, 0x796c0, 0x796c4) in gdb are giving this message when executed: Cannot access memory at address 0x0. Some mov instructions throw this too. And eventually we get here:
Is the ARMv7 binary invalid under QEMU-user?
From a preliminary analysis the binary looks to be of atleast ARMv7. It runs under qemu-user without problems. However, running under a ARMv6 QEMU VM it crashes with an Illegal instruction, similar to yours. Digging deep there’re indeed some instructions which are invalid under ARMv5. Above it crashed on the movw r12, #0 at 0x20c1b38.
Is there an arm binary on the Internet?
It is a closed-source, stripped ARM binary. That said, it is freely downloadable on the internet so there is a link to it at the bottom of this post. The target is an ARM binary pulled from a firmware image. I have set up an ARM VM, but have also tried running the binary on a Pi with the same result.
