How large are x86 instructions?
x86 instructions can be anywhere between 1 and 15 bytes long. The length is defined separately for each instruction, depending on the available modes of operation of the instruction, the number of required operands and more.
How many x86 instructions are there?
According to Intel’s XED, as of this writing, there are 1503 defined x86 instructions (“iclasses” in XED lingo), from AAA to XTEST (this includes AMD-specific extensions too, by the way).
How many x64 instructions are there?
al. states that the current x86-64 design “contains 981 unique mnemonics and a total of 3,684 instruction variants” [2]. However they do not specify which features are included in their count.
What is x86-64 instruction set?
x86-64 is a 64-bit version of the x86 processor architecture, which Windows PCs have used for several decades. It is similar to x64, but refers specifically to processors that use the x86 instruction set. A 32-bit processor can only reference 232 (4,294,967,296) addressable values in memory — roughly 4 gigabytes.
What does RISC-V stand for?
reduced instruction set computer
RISC-V (pronounced “risk-five”) is an open standard instruction set architecture (ISA) based on established reduced instruction set computer (RISC) principles. The instruction set is designed for a wide range of uses.
How many bytes is an instruction in x86?
The x86 instruction set (16, 32 or 64 bit, all variants/modes) guarantees / requires that instructions are at most 15 bytes. Anything beyond that will give an “invalid opcode”. You can’t achieve that without using redundant prefixes (e.g. multiple 0x66 or 0x67 prefixes, for example).
Which is the latest version of the x86 instruction set?
The updated instruction set is also grouped according to architecture ( i386, i486, i686) and more generally is referred to as x86 32 and x86 64 (also known as AMD64 ). 8086/8088 datasheet documents only base 10 version of the AAD instruction ( opcode 0xD5 0x0A), but any other base will work. Later Intel’s documentation has the generic form too.
What’s the maximum length of an Intel 64 instruction?
The maximum length of an Intel 64 and IA-32 instruction remains 15 bytes. You can construct instructions that would encode to more than 15 bytes, but such instructions would be illegal and would probably not execute. Thanks for contributing an answer to Stack Overflow!
Is there a limit to the length of an 8086 instruction?
To be more specific, there is no limit to the length of 8086 instructions. Cool! Unfortunately, modern day i386 variants throw a general protection fault when attempting to decode instructions longer than 15 bytes. So what does an infinitely-long-but-valid 8086 instruction look like? Kinda boring, actually.
