From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Return-oriented programming (ROP) is a computer security exploit technique that allows an attacker to execute code in the presence of security defenses such as executable space protection and code signing.
How do ROP gadgets work?
ROP makes use of actual executable code sequences, called ROP gadgets, in the program memory space (marked as executable memory). At this point, the program stack where the return addresses from calls are stored is hijacked by the attacker. Optionally perform an action the attacker wants performed.

Except on very hardened binaries, attackers can easily find a portion of code that is located in a fixed location (circumventing ASLR) and which is executable (circumventing DEP).
