How are segment registers used?
The segment registers stores the starting addresses of a segment. To get the exact location of data or instruction within a segment, an offset value (or displacement) is required.
What is FS and GS register?
The registers FS and GS are segment registers. They have no processor-defined purpose, but instead are given purpose by the OS’s running them. In Windows 64-bit the GS register is used to point to operating system defined structures. FS and GS are commonly used by OS kernels to access thread-specific memory.
Are CS DS ES SS special registers?
Four special-purpose registers, SP, BP, SI, and DI. Four segment registers, CS, DS, ES, and SS. The instruction pointer, IP (sometimes referred to as the program counter).
What is the main purpose of segment registers?
It is basically used to enhance the speed of execution of the computer system, so that the processor is able to fetch and execute the data from the memory easily and fast. The Bus Interface Unit (BIU) contains four 16 bit special purpose registers (mentioned below) called as Segment Registers.
What are the names of the 4 segment registers?
The 8086 has four special segment registers: cs, ds, es, and ss. These stand for Code Seg- ment, Data Segment, Extra Segment, and Stack Segment, respectively. These registers are all 16 bits wide. They deal with selecting blocks (segments) of main memory.
What is segment overriding?
The Segment Override Prefix says that if we want to use some other segment register than the default segment for a particular code, then it is possible. It can simply be one by mentioning the segment that is to be used before the address location or the offset register containing that address.
How many types of segment registers are there?
How are the segment registers ( FS, GS, Cs, Ds ) used?
It seems that this is heavily related to the segment registers %fs, %gs, %cs, %ss, %ds, %es. Can somebody explain how these registers are used, both, in user and kernel-land programs ?
How many FS and GS segments are there in Linux?
In 32-bit mode the CPU provides 6 segments, which also support segment limits. The limits can be used to enforce address space protections. In 64-bit mode the CS/SS/DS/ES segments are ignored and the base address is always 0 to provide a full 64bit address space.
How many segment registers are there in x86?
As you can see we could use either segment to reach physical addresses between 0x10100 and 0x1FFFF since the segments overlap. The x86 line of computers have 6 segment registers (CS, DS, ES, FS, GS, SS). They are totally independent of one another. DS, ES, FS, GS, SS are used to form addresses when you want to read/write to memory.
What are the extra registers in assembly programming?
Apart from the DS, CS and SS registers, there are other extra segment registers – ES (extra segment), FS and GS, which provide additional segments for storing data. In assembly programming, a program needs to access the memory locations. All memory locations within a segment are relative to the starting address of the segment.
