Can IR sensors see through plastic?
Can thermal imaging see through plastic? Infrared radiation will pass through the plastic, allowing the thermal camera to detect whatever is behind it, while visible light will be blocked. However, this trick only works with very thin plastic—thicker plastics will block infrared radiation.
Can infrared light pass through clear plastic?
Far-infrared light is not detected by digital cameras and will not pass through clear plastic or water.

FWIW, I once needed to create a plexiglass window/shell for a near-IR camera. Most CCD and CMOS sensors are sensitive in the near IR range (e.g. around 850nm), which is where @user3095849 suggested your sensor sits.
