Can static variables be transient?
If the variable is defined as Static and Transient both than static modifier will govern the behavior of variable and not Transient. If you have assigned a value to a variable while loading the class then that value will be assigned to the static variable while de-serializing the class but not to transient.
What is transient variable?
A transient variable is a variable that can not be serialized. According to Java Language Specification [jls-8.3. 1.3] – “Variables may be marked transient to indicate that they are not part of the persistent state of an object.”
What is the difference between variable and static variable?
Static variables are shared among all instances of a class. Non static variables are specific to that instance of a class. Static variable is like a global variable and is available to all methods. Non static variable is like a local variable and they can be accessed through only instance of a class.
What is the purpose of a transient variable?
transient is a variables modifier used in serialization. At the time of serialization, if we don’t want to save value of a particular variable in a file, then we use transient keyword. When JVM comes across transient keyword, it ignores original value of the variable and save default value of that variable data type.
Can we serialize static fields?
Yes, static variable will be serialized if it is initialized at the time of declaration.
Can a method be transient?
Transient in Java is used to indicate that a field should not be part of the serialization process. The modifier Transient can be applied to member variables of a class to turn off serialization on these member variables. Every field that is marked as transient will not be serialized.
What is a transient class?
transient is a Java keyword which marks a member variable not to be serialized when it is persisted to streams of bytes. public class Foo implements Serializable { private String saveMe; private transient String dontSaveMe; private transient String password; //… }
How do you make a variable transient?
Example of Java Transient Keyword The age data member of the Student class is declared as transient, its value will not be serialized. If you deserialize the object, you will get the default value for transient variable. Let’s create a class with transient variable. Now write the code for deserialization.
What’s the difference between a static variable and a transient variable?
Static Variable. Static variables belong to a class and not to any individual instance. The concept of serialization is concerned with the object’s current state. Only data associated with a specific instance of a class is serialized, therefore static member fields are ignored during serialization.
Can a transient variable be serialized in Java?
Bullet Point A static variable cannot be serialized. While de-serializing a value can be available for Static variables if the same is provided while initialization of the base class. If the variable is defined as Static and Transient both than static modifier will govern the behavior of variable and not Transient.
Is the companyceo variable static or transient in Java?
In both, the case value stored here are taken from class (Employee class) and not from Object (emp object). Also, companyCEO variable value is saved even when it is transient. Because static modifier changes the behavior of this variable. A static variable cannot be serialized.
Do You mark a variable as transient in Java?
While serialization if you don’t want to save the state of a variable. You have to mark that variable as Transient. The environment will know that this variable should be ignored and will not save the value of same.
