What are reference strings?
The string of memory references is called reference string. Reference strings are generated artificially or by tracing a given system and recording the address of each memory reference. If we have a reference to a page p, then any immediately following references to page p will never cause a page fault.

Are strings passed by reference?
When the string “ab” is created, Java allocates the amount of memory required to store the string object. Then, the object is assigned to variable x, the variable is actually assigned a reference to the object. The variable x contains a reference to the string object. x is not a reference itself!
