What is the recommendation for CSRF?
We recommend token based CSRF defense (either stateful/stateless) as a primary defense to mitigate CSRF in your applications. Only for highly sensitive operations, we also recommend a user interaction based protection (either re-authentication/one-time token, detailed in section 6.5) along with token based mitigation.
Should CSRF token be stored in cookie?
The CSRF token in fact could be the standard authentication cookie when using this method, and this value is submitted via cookies as usual with the request, but the value is also repeated in either a hidden field or header, of which an attacker cannot replicate as they cannot read the value in the first place.
Where should I put CSRF token?
How should CSRF tokens be transmitted? For additional safety, the field containing the CSRF token should be placed as early as possible within the HTML document, ideally before any non-hidden input fields and before any locations where user-controllable data is embedded within the HTML.
What is CSRF TOKEN and how it works?
A CSRF Token is a secret, unique and unpredictable value a server-side application generates in order to protect CSRF vulnerable resources. The tokens are generated and submitted by the server-side application in a subsequent HTTP request made by the client.
When does OWASP csrfguard submit a Synchronizer token?
When a user interacts with this HTML, CSRF prevention tokens (i.e. cryptographically random synchronizer tokens) are submitted with the corresponding HTTP request. It is the responsibility of OWASP CSRFGuard to ensure the token is present and is valid for the current HTTP request.
How to prevent cross site request forgery in OWASP?
See the OWASP XSS Prevention Cheat Sheet for detailed guidance on how to prevent XSS flaws. Do not use GET requests for state changing operations. The synchronizer token pattern is one of the most popular and recommended methods to mitigate CSRF. Synchronizer token defenses have been built into many frameworks.
When to use non idempotent GET request or anti CSRF token?
Important: non- idempotent GET requests represent an anti-pattern where CSRF protection is concerned. Always use POST requests with anti-CSRF tokens for proper protection. Please note that the following examples may not entail a complete anti-CSRF solution for any given Web application.
Can a CSRF token be transmitted using cookies?
CSRF tokens should not be transmitted using cookies. The CSRF token can be added through hidden fields, headers, and can be used with forms, and AJAX calls. Make sure that the token is not leaked in the server logs, or in the URL.
