Can MD5 hashes be the same?
Generally, two files can have the same md5 hash only if their contents are exactly the same. Even a single bit of variation will generate a completely different hash value. There is one caveat, though: An md5 sum is 128 bits (16 bytes).
Can MD5 be duplicated?
Although random MD5 collisions are exceedingly rare, if your users can provide files (that will be stored verbatim) then they can engineer collisions to occur. That is, they can deliberately create two files with the same MD5sum but different data.
How many unique MD5 hashes are possible?
we can have 1632 number of MD5 hashes, while there are 1664 SHA-256 hashes. we will have 3.4*1038 duplicate MD5 hashes!
Does MD5 have known collision attacks?
The act of searching for collisions for a particular function is known as a collision attack. MD5 and SHA-1 are two of the most popular hash func- tions and are in widespread use. However, MD5 and SHA- 1 are vulnerable to collision attacks based on differential cryptanalysis.
Can two different strings generate the same MD5 hash?
Yes, of course: MD5 hashes have a finite length, but there are an infinite number of possible character strings that can be MD5-hashed. Yes, it is possible that two different strings can generate the same MD5 hash code.
Is it possible to create a collision on MD5?
Yes you can, see at the MD5 Collision Demo, the two blocks: produce an MD5 collision. Each of these blocks has MD5 hash 79054025255fb1a26e4bc422aef54eb4. Just to show you how easy it is today to create collisions on MD5:
Is there such a thing as a cracked MD5?
It is unfortunate that both MD5 and SHA1 are considered as nearly cracked, because the general answer for a cryptographic hash function of good reputation is: “Do not worry about collisions. Act as if they never happen.
What’s the shortest pair of strings that causes an MD5?
Ironically, a few weeks after I posted the previous answer, two Chinese researchers, Tao Xie and Dengguo Feng, published a new single-block collision for MD5. I was unaware of that paper until now.
