What can zip files contain?
They contain data and files together in one place. But with zipped files, the contents are compressed, which reduces the amount of data used by your computer. Another way to describe ZIP files is as an archive. The archive contains all the compressed files in one location.
Can a zip file contain itself?
It’s zip files all the way down: each one contains another zip file under the name r/r. Like the line of shopping carts, it never ends, because it loops back onto itself: the zip file contains itself!
Do zip files contain metadata?
The ZIP format doesn’t contain nearly as much metadata as a file on the filesystem (nor does it need to). You can extract all metadata from a zipfile without decompressing the file contents.
What happens when you zip a file?
Zipped (compressed) files take up less storage space and can be transferred to other computers more quickly than uncompressed files. Combine several files into a single zipped folder to more easily share a group of files.
Why is ZIP file same size as original?
You say the folder was mostly pictures and movies. Usually those are already in compressed format and won’t compress any farther. In fact a zipped file of an already compressed file can end up being larger than the original because there is a certain amount of overhead in creating a zipped version.
Can you see the contents of a zip file?
Yes. The Windows file explorer will show you the contents of a zip file. Looking inside a zip file works the same as looking inside a directory. Just open it. This does not extract the contents.
What’s the difference between gzip and zip files?
Try the ZipFile class instead (though sadly, it doesn’t work on streams, just files). Apart from simply being a different file format, the big difference is that GZip is for compression only, while Zip is also an archive (that is, it can contain multiple files).
How does a zip file work on a computer?
Think of the way a folder works in Windows. You drop contents into a folder to organize your files, and then you can transport that folder to any location on your computer, and the files inside of it go with it. Zip files work in a similar way, except the contents inside the “folder” (zip file) are compressed to reduce storage use.
Do you have to extract files from a zip file?
Strictly speaking the other answers are “wrong” in that opening a file out of a ZIP is in fact extracting it. Even if you’re using some automated idea like the zip-as-a-folder view in Windows. While the answers as practically correct in that you don’t need to “manually” extract from the ZIP.
