Which is better HMAC or RSA-information for JWT?
HMAC is a specialized symmetric signature mode that is specific to JWT. It has no practical use cases as far as I am aware, you’re better off ignoring it entirely. In HMAC, the application and the identity provider share ONE secret passphrase.
How is secret key generated for JWT based authentication?
It is negotiated and distributed out of band. Hence, if you’re the intended recipient of the token, the sender should have provided you with the secret out of band. If you’re the sender, you can use an arbitrary string of bytes as the secret, it can be generated or purposely chosen.
What happens to the JWT signature after verification?
Well, it is actually quite straightforward. Once the JWT is received, the verification will take its header and payload, and together with the secret that is still saved on the server, basically create a test signature. But the original signature that was generated when the JWT was first created is still in the token, right?
How to make HMAC _ SHA256 key from secret string?
This can be done with JwtConsumer by calling .setRelaxVerificationKeyValidation () on JwtConsumerBuilder and on JsonWebSignature directly with .setDoKeyValidation (false). Below is a quick example producing and consuming a JWT using HMAC SHA256 that shows both.
Is the data stored in JWT readable by the client?
The data stored in the JWT is readable by the client. This may be an issue. The server side needs code to generate, validate, and read JWTs. It’s not hard but there is a bit of a learning curve and security depends on it. Anyone who gets a copy of the signing key can create JWTs. You might not know when this happens.
How are JWT tokens different from OAuth tokens?
JWT Token. This token is self-descriptive, it contains all necessary information about the token itself, user cannot change for example expiration date or any other claim, because this token is generated (signed) by the server with secret keyword. This is also clear. But one big problem, personally for me, how to invalidate token. OAuth 2.
Can a JWT validate a client IP address?
You can store the client IP address in a JWT and validate it but that prevents clients from roaming from say Wi-Fi to cellular. Ask yourself why you need to invalidate the original token. A user logs in, a token is generated and off the app goes.
