How can I tell where spam is coming from?
To track down spammers in your email, follow these steps in order:
- Look at the e-mail headers in the message.
- Follow the flow of Received headers backward from your ISP.
- Identify the owner of the last verifiable e-mail-handling server.
- Look for URLs and e-mail addresses in the contents of the spam.
What identifies an email box to which email messages are delivered?
The sender’s mail server (technically called a “Mail Transfer Agent,” or MTA) looks up the “@domain.com” portion of the recipient’s email address in a Domain Name System (DNS) server to determine which destination mail server (referred to as a “Mail Exchanger,” or MX) it should contact to deliver the message.

Where does the X originate in an email?
X-Originating-IP: The IP address of the computer on which the email originated. Once again, an optional and informational “X-” header. In this case, the IP address is one of Hotmail’s servers. Received: Herein lies the gold. I’ll get into more detail on that below.

The first ‘Received’ Header containing the true IP address of the sender (e.g. 203.172.49.180 ), is appended to the message, appearing now at the very top of the sequence of Headers. As the message travels over the Internet, new ‘Received’ fields will be appended to the top of the sequence of Headers.
