Samba lets you encourage users to select a password by allowing the administrator to prevent users with blank, or null, passwords from connecting. This is done by adding the Null Passwords global attribute and setting it to No. Samba offers the ability to set up what is referred to as share level security.
What is the security or authentication mode for the Samba server?
Some commercial SMB servers such as NT actually associate passwords directly with shares in share-level security, but Samba always uses the UNIX authentication scheme where it is a username/password pair that is authenticated, not a share/password pair.
What is Samba authentication?
Authentication is the process of verifying the identity of an entity. Before users can create SMB connections to access data contained on the Storage Virtual Machine (SVM), they must be authenticated by the domain to which the CIFS server belongs.
Is samba connection secure?
Samba itself is secure in the fact that it encrypts passwords (can be set to use cleartext but that would be bad) but by default data is not encrypted. Samba can be compiled with SSL support, but you then have to find a client that supports SMB over SSL because Windows itself doesn’t.
Samba currently supports four security levels on its network: share, user, server, and domain. Each share in the workgroup has one or more passwords associated with it. Anyone who knows a valid password for the share can access it. Each share in the workgroup is configured to allow access from certain users.
Why is samba not secure?
With this method, each share is assigned specific users that can access it. When a user requests a connection to a share, Samba authenticates by validating the given username and password with the authorized users in the configuration file and the passwords in the password database of the Samba server.
Which is the default security setting for Samba?
User-Level Security User-level security is the default setting for Samba. Even if the security = user directive is not listed in the smb.conf file, it is used by Samba. If the server accepts the client’s username/password, the client can then mount multiple shares without specifying a password for each instance.

Samba can also accept session-based username/password requests.
Can a Samba server be a member of Active Directory?
security = ADS: allows the Samba server to join an Active Directory domain as a native member. See Active Directory Integration for details. security = server: this mode is left over from before Samba could become a member server, and due to some security issues should not be used.
