Why is PGP encrypted?
PGP encryption can be a powerful tool in protecting your data, your privacy, and your security. It provides you with a relatively easy, completely secure method of sending emails, and also allows you to verify the identity of the people you are communicating with.
Is PGP encryption asymmetric?
PGP uses symmetric and asymmetric keys to encrypt data being transferred across networks. To encrypt data, PGP generates a symmetric key to encrypt data which is protected by the asymmetric key. Asymmetric encryption uses two different keys for the encryption and decryption processes of sensitive information.
Can you use a PGP public key for encryption?
We can use vendor provided PGP public key to do encryption and send the encrypted data/files to vendor. Once they receive it then they can use their Private Key to decrypt. Vendor can share their public key either in asc (Text) or gpg (Binary) extension.
When do you create an OpenPGP key you create two subkeys?
When you create an OpenPGP key with GPG (which is the focus of this article), you create two subkeys by default: one for encryption and one for signing. The subkeys discussed in this article are only used for signing. The reason for this is that it is impossible to sensibly employ multiple encryption subkeys.
How is a subkey calculated in a PGP signature?
This signature is calculated directly on the primary key and subkey, and not on any User ID or other packets. A signature that binds a signing subkey MUST have an Embedded Signature subpacket in this binding signature that contains a 0x19 signature made by the signing subkey on the primary key and subkey.
Why am I encrypting with subkey instead?
In particular, you do not want to store it on a computer that might get stolen or hacked into; you want to keep your primary key off-line in a safe place. This, of course, makes your primary key very inconvenient to use. So for day-to-day operations you want to use a key that is not such a big problem to replace if it gets compromised.
