Why would a MAC address filter be used rather than an IP filter?
MAC address filtering adds an extra layer of security that checks the device’s MAC address against a list of agreed addresses. If the client’s address matches one on the router’s list, access is granted otherwise it doesn’t join the network. Set a list of allowed devices.
Is it safe to publicize your computer’s MAC address?

The only way that would make sense is if the Air carried two seperate Wifi modules; one for 2.4Ghz and one for 5Ghz. However, if that were the case, they would be required to publish the MAC addresses (FCC requirement). As it is, only one of the MAC addresses is actually visible on the Air in the About section.
What to do when your WiFi is off on your Mac?
Click the Wi-Fi icon ( or ) in the menu bar. If Wi-Fi is off, choose “Turn Wi-Fi on.” Select a nearby Wi-Fi network from the list. If you don’t see your network listed, make sure it’s nearby and that others can connect to it. It could also be a “hidden” network.
