You can’t migrate directly from SharePoint Server 2010 (or SharePoint Foundation 2010) to SharePoint Online. So much of the migration work is manual.
Using the SharePoint Migration tool
- Start SPMT, and then enter your Microsoft 365 username and password.
- Select Start your first migration.
- Select SharePoint Server.
- Enter the SharePoint Server site URL where your content is located, and then select Next.

- 1 Start the SharePoint Migration tool and in the dialog box that opens, click Next.
- 2 Enter the username and password of your Office 365 account and click Sign in.
- 3 Click Choose a source and destination and select the option SharePoint Server (on-premises).
