What are secondary phases?
A secondary phase can form around a joint due to interdiffusion of elements between dissolved base metal and alloying elements of insert metal during bonding. When secondary phases are present in the joint area, they usually influence on the mechanical properties of the joint.

The primary alpha dendrites grow, which accounts for the shapes the alpha forms in cross sectional samples. As the remaining liquid cools its composition becomes richer in B (effectively sliding down the liquidus line).
