Alternate Access mapping is a Service, which helps SharePoint, that receives a request to the Web Application with an internal URL to one of the five zones to return the pages, which contain links to the public URL. Many internal URLs can be associated with a single public URL.
On the Select an Alternate Access Mapping Collection page, click a mapping collection. In the Add internal URL section, in the URL protocol, host and port box, type the new internal URL (for example, https://www.fabrikam.com). In the Zone list, click the zone for the internal URL. Click Save.
What do you need to know about alternate access mapping?
If you are not aware of AAM or you have some misconceptions about it, I would highly recommend you to read through an excellent blog Alternate Access Mappings (AAMs) *Explained by “Brain Pendergrass” from Microsoft and would like to thank him for such an awesome blog to make me understand this concept in depth.
For more information, see Plan alternate access mappings for SharePoint 2013. On the SharePoint Central Administration website, click System Settings. On the System Settings page, in the Farm Management section, click Configure alternate access mappings.
How to remove alternate access mapping ( Aam ) DLLs?
Extract and Re-deploy custom solutions which are bonded to the old default zone URL to new default zone URL or a shared one with other web app URLs (Exclude this effort for Globally deployed ones). Also make sure the third party solutions are properly uninstalled during removal, like related DLLs are removed manually before package reinstalled.
Can a host named site collection use alternate access mappings?
Host-named site collections can’t use alternate access mappings. Host-named site collections are automatically considered in the Default zone, and the URL of the request must not be changed between the user and the server. Multiple internal URLs can be associated with a single public URL.
