See SharePoint service description. You can’t migrate directly from SharePoint Server 2010 (or SharePoint Foundation 2010) to SharePoint Online. So much of the migration work is manual. But this stage gives you the opportunity to prune data and sites that are no longer needed before the move.
As of SharePoint Server 2019, upgrades must go serially. There’s no way to upgrade from SharePoint Server 2010 to SharePoint Server 2016 or to SharePoint 2019 directly. Serial upgrade path: It will take time and planning to follow the entire path from SharePoint 2010 to SharePoint Server 2016.
It’s possible to maintain your end-of-support SharePoint 2010 farm, install a SharePoint Server 2016 farm on new hardware (so the separate farms run side-by-side), and then plan and execute a manual migration of content (for downloading and re-uploading content, for example).

Last week, I’ve posted about converting a Lookup column to a Managed Metadata column while doing your SharePoint migration from 2007 to 2010. In the course of this last post, I quickly talked about the property mapper, but didn’t really explain it in detail. This week, I want to make sure you are all familiarized with the property mapper.
Before I start a copy operation, I click on ‘Change property mappings’ in the Ribbon menu. This window shows the columns available in the source contact list (left side). It also shows the assigned columns for every column available at the destination (right side).
Review your settings, and the select Migrate. After you select Migrate, the progress of your migration jobs appears. As they complete, you can view either detailed or summary reports of an individual job or a single summary report that includes all migration jobs submitted during this session.
