We mentioned in our Migrate to SharePoint 2013 – Supported Upgrade Paths article, that there is a new way to perform your migration with SharePoint 2013. You can now attach your previous databases to SharePoint 2013 and they will run in a SharePoint 2010 experience.

So, the only way to upgrade is to migrate. You can’t reuse your existing Hardware for SharePoint 2013 and you can’t install both SharePoint 2010 and SharePoint 2013 on same machine. Why do I get orphaned sites in SharePoint migration?
If you failed to delete the web application’s root site database, you will get “Orphaned Sites” issue on running Test-SPContentDatabase cmdlet as part of migration process. This is because the root site collection exists in both content databases and leads to conflict!
Can you install SharePoint 2010 on top of SharePoint 2013?
You can’t install SharePoint 2013 on top of SharePoint 2010 (as we can install SharePoint 2010 on top of SharePoint 2007) . So only migration is allowed in SharePoint 2013. You can’t re-use your existing Hardware for SharePoint 2013 (Also you can’t install both SharePoint 2010 and SharePoint 2013 on same machine).
In the database-attach method, you first create and configure a SharePoint 2013 farm. Then you copy the content and service application databases from the SharePoint 2010 Products farm, and then attach and upgrade the databases. This upgrades the data to the new version.
Why is SharePoint not working on Office 365?
SharePoint 2013 installs some of the files belonging to 2010, which means that most of your customizations will still work. But this will not always be true. To fix this, you must upgrade from Classic to Claims based.
